Speech of the Patron of the CDA and RCPYC on the 12th of February 2012 at the 70th Anniversary Remembrance Dinner at the Royal Airforce Base Manston honoring the Global Offshore Sailing Team for establishing international relations.
Mr President, Worshipful Mayors, fellow members of the Channel Dash Association and supporters of the Channel Dash Memorial Trust, good evening.
Such a significant year in the history of the Channel Dash could not pass with a suitable series of events to ensure that the sacrifice and commitment made by all those that took part in Operation Fuller be appropriately remembered. The significance of dining here has already be alluded to and one can only imagine what it would have been like 70 years ago tonight, the elation of the CO returning from London with his shiny new gong and the desire to celebrate tinged with restraint and trepidation that at any time the call may come to defend our shores from the might of the German Navy attempting to transit the straits of Dover. Your attendance here tonight in support of the work undertaken by the Channel Dash Memorial Trust is greatly appreciated and this evening could not have been possible without the help and hard work of many. Wing Commander Jerry Wilson the Commanding Office of the DFTDC Manston for graciously allowing us to invade his patch and offering support to this dinner, I would ask Warrant Officer Derek Crow Brown to pass our thanks to the Mess members here at the Phoenix Club for making us so welcome throughout the weekend, to Nicky Charles and her team in the mess for the excellent food and service thank you, to David Kingsmill for getting the evening off to such a moving a poignant start and Peter Bryan and his musicians from the Kohima band for their excellent musical accompaniment to the dinner thank for your respective performances, and large vote of thanks must go to Alexandra Godfrey who has given so freely of her time to support Peter Nixon and Malcolm Godfrey by acting in the role as Events Manager and coordinating all the events over this 70th Anniversary weekend.Of course we are immensely grateful to Hornby for their support in this special year, through their Airfix brand and in conjunction with the Modelzone chain of stores they are producing and retailing a limited edition box set of model kits to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Channel Dash and in addition to a very generous donation towards the Operation Fuller Memorial they are helping to raise awareness by including information about the trust within the box. And finally thank you to all of you for attending tonight and giving so generously in support of the Trust as we move closer to erecting our next monument in Dover to all those from all 3 services that participated in Operation Fuller on the 12th of February 1942.
Of course the work of the Trust does not end with the unveiling of this significant tribute, Peter, Malcolm and the committee are already working to build relationships with representatives of organisations on both sides of the channel that share a common interest in this action and such connections can only be positive as the Trust embarks on its role as an educational body to inform all of the significance of the Channel Dash.
We are delighted to have with us this evening Jochen Werne and Stefano Malvestio from the Global Offshore Sailing Team who, in addition to offering a place on their coming trip to follow the route taken by the German Fleet during the Channel Dash, have been instrumental in establishing links between our Trust and organisations in Germany including the descendants of Admiral Otto Ciliax.
I am pleased to inform you that later in the year the Trust has been asked to participate in the War and Peace Show at the Hop Farm in Paddock Wood at the request of Rex Cadman and Georgina from the show who are with us tonight, we are also very grateful to them for supplying the excellent replica aircraft that guarded our entrance this evening. The publicity the Trust gains from such exposure can only be positive and bode well for the future as we move to raise awareness. To the British Operation Fuller, to the Germans Operation Cerberus, whatever you call it the outcome is the same. Without doubt this is a true story of selfless bravery against impossible odds. Any person that is prepared without question to give their life in the service of their country and for the protection of others should be remembered. It will always be difficult for those left behind if this sacrifice is remembered as part of an operation perceived by many as someone else’s mistake. This does not mean that any criticism falls at the feet of those that gave above and beyond the call without question and with no consideration for their own safety save to follow orders and act in the highly professional manner for which they had been trained so thoroughly. What might be questioned is why they were put in the position of having to offer themselves in sacrifice as part of a mission that with hindsight was always doomed to fail and was similar to sending a swarm of flies to be swatted by a group of angry picnickers on the beach. The Channel Dash Memorial Trust has no intention of letting the memory of these brave men fade or be tarnished in any way. In conclusion I would ask you all to rise and drink a toast to all those brave souls that participated in Operations Fuller and Cerberus especially those on both sides who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Ladies and Gentlemen: The Channel Dash Heroes.
